Colonial Virginia Council issues 2014 FOS CSP

Since 2004 Colonial Virginia Council has awarded a special patch to donors who contribute $75 or more to their annual Friends of Scouting campaign. Each of the patches has represented one of the points of the Scout Law. For 2014 the theme is Clean, represented by a completely white shoulder patch with white lettering and centered fleur d'lis ghosted into the white background.

FOS contributions are a vital part of the Council's operating budget. Please consider a donation to help perpetuate Scouting programs across southeast Virginia: View/Print 2014 Friends of Scouting brochure.

2015 will mark the completion of the Scout Law theme, with Reverent.

Colonial Virginia Council issues 2013 Friends of Scouting CSP

Colonial Virginia Council recently issued their 2013 Friends of Scouting CSP, tenth in the Scout Law series which began in 2004. The theme of this year's patch is "BRAVE" and the design features a Boy Scout and a Cub Scout saluting a soldier silhouetted against a setting sun. The patch is apparently from a different manufacturer than its predecessors since the size is several millimeters smaller in width. You can add this patch to your collection with a $75 contribution to the Council. Check out all of the patches in the Scout Law series on the CVC Friends of Scouting emblems page.

Colonial Virginia Council 2012 FOS CSP

Colonial Virginia Council has issued their ninth Friends of Scouting CSP in the Scout Law series of twelve. The theme for this year's patch is "A Scout Is Thrifty."

The 2012 FOS patch takes its design from the 1944 Norman Rockwell painting entitled "We Too Have A Job To Do" that features a saluting Boy Scout in front of an American flag background. The painting was used to rally Scouts to volunteer service during World War II.  For example, Scouts collected 10.5 million tons of scrap aluminum in 1941—88 percent of the total collected by all Americans (from Scouting magazine).

Like many Councils across the country, Colonial Virginia Council relies upon contributions through its Friends of Scouting program to help fund the programs for the more than 6,000 Scouts they serve. Learn more about the program and consider a contribution today by downloading the Colonial Virginia Council 2012 Friends of Scouting brochure.

You can view this and all of the  Friends of Scouting patches on the Colonial Virginia Council FOS issues page at kecoughtan.com.

2011 Colonial Virginia Council Friends of Scouting CSP issued

Larry Johnson sent me a picture of the newly released 2011 Friends of Scouting CSP from Colonial Virginia Council.  This issue is the eighth in a set of 12, each devoted to a point of the Scout Law. This year's point is Cheerful and the patch design reflects the sailing area of the Council's Bayport Scout Reservation which is located in Jamaica, Virginia, on the shores of the Rappahannock River with access to the Chesapeake Bay. The sailing program called CHASE is an acronym for Chesapeake Bay High Adventure Sailing Experience.

Friends of Scouting is an important funding source for Colonial Virginia Council, representing 20% of their operating budget. Take a moment to send in your donation today and add this beautiful patch to your collection while helping promote Scouting in Southeast Virginia. You can download the flyer with more information and an order form here.

2009 Colonia Virginia FOS CSP issued

The 2009 Friends of Scouting CSP for Colonial Virginia Council was recently released. The theme for this year is the sixth point of the Scout Law, "A Scout is Kind." The patch features an illustration of the Birdsong Center at Bayport Scout Reservation, a 16,000 square foot air conditioned multipurpose facility that includes an administration area, dining hall, medical center, trading post, and leader's retreat.

The CSP is available to donors who contribute a minimum of $75.00 to the Council's Friends of Scouting program. If you are interested in making a donation you can download the form here.

New Colonial Virginia Council FOS web page

Recently I discovered a neat new way to zoom images from a web page and thought I would try implementing it on my web site to see if it would be useful for displaying thumbnail images of patches that enlarge when clicked on. The best part is that you can have multiple images open at the same time for comparison.

The first page I tried this on details the special shoulder patches that have been issued by Colonial Virginia Council for their Friends of Scouting donors. I noticed that several of the patch designs were inspired by Norman Rockwell paintings and thought it would be cool to provide images of the patch and the corresponding painting to illustrate the source of the design.

Give it a try and let me know if you run into any issues. So far it works fine on my MacBook Pro and even on my iPhone.

Colonial Virginia Council 2008 FOS CSP

The new CSP for Friends of Scouting donors to Colonial Virginia Council is now available.

This year's theme is Courteous, continuing the 12 points of the Scout Law theme the Council selected when they launched the program in 2003.

The patch requires a minimum donation of $75.00 to Colonial Virginia Council. Prior versions have included different borders for Eagle Scouts and United Way donors but this is reportedly the only version available. View and print the 2008 FOS flyer to make a donation.

Thanks to Larry Johnson for the excellent picture!

Colonial Virginia Council 2007 Friends of Scouting issues

Colonial Virginia Council recently issued the fourth design in their series of shoulder patches given to contributors to their "Friends of Scouting" program. Following the 12 points of the Scout Law, the theme for this issue is A Scout is Friendly.

The patch illustrates the legendary story of American publisher WD Boyce, lost in the fog while visiting London in 1909 and receiving aid from a local Boy scout. The lad refused a tip for his services, explaining to Boyce that he could not accept a tip for "doing a Good Turn." Boyce was reportedly so impressed that he sought out Lord Baden Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts, to learn more about his program. Upon his return to the states, Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America in 1910.

The standard FOS 2007 issue has a blue border and the issue provided to Eagle Scout contributors has a silver border. Minimum contribution for either issue is 25.00. No word yet on whether there will be a third border variety for contributors who donate to the Council via the local United Way campaign as there was in 2006.

New Colonial Virginia Council FOS issue

My friend Tim Ewing sent me a picture of a third version of the Colonial Virginia Council Friends of Scouting issue for 2006 which is themed "Helpful," one of the 12 points of the Scout Law.

The prior versions featured a silver mylar border (given to donors who are Eagle Scouts) or an orange mylar border (which Tim informed me is considered "copper") for general donors to the Council's Friends of Scouting program. A third version with gold mylar border has been issued for donors who contribute to the council via the local United Way campaign.

Earlier Friends of Scouting CSP issues in the series were themed "Trustworthy" and "Loyal" (the first two points of the Scout Law) and did not have border variations.

Colonial Virginia Council "FOS" issues

Last year Colonial Virginia Council joined many other Boy Scout Councils in issuing a special edition of their council shoulder patch specifically reserved for individuals who make donations to their Friends of Scouting (FOS) program. Following the lead of other councils, Colonial Virginia also chose the theme of committing to a series of 12 patches, issued one per year, with each including a point of the Boy Scout Law.

The donation required for a Colonial Virginia FOS patch is 25.00, which means that a complete series of 12 will represent a collective donation of 300.00 to the Council. The 25.00 price seems fairly standard compared to other councils, though some charge significantly more (Patriots' Path Council, for example, asks a minimum donation of at least 248.00 for their annual FOS shoulder patch, almost 3,000 for the set of 12 once complete).

Colonial Virginia Council "Trustworthy" FOS issue (2004)
Similar to the S6 standard Council issue, border is gold rather than yellow, "Trustworthy" lettered in blue. Limited edition of 500.

Colonial Virginia Council "Loyal" FOS issue (2005)
Features "Historic St. Luke's Church, Circa 1632." Limited edition of 500.

Thanks to Larry Johnson and Tim Ewing for pictures of these patches.
