Wahunsenakah 2011 Summer Service patch

Wahunsenakah Lodge held their 2011 Summer Service at Bayport Scout Reservation on Sept. 15-17, issuing the rectangular pocket patch with loop pictured above. The patch was designed by the Lodge Insignia Design Committee and features a Native American Chief, the totem of Wicomico Chapter which serves the Chesapeake Bay District of the Colonial Virginia Council.

The Arrowmen of Wahunsenakah Lodge had plenty of work to accomplish in their efforts to help the camp recover from the recent destruction left by Hurricane Irene.

Wicomico Chapter issues two new arrowhead patches

Wicomico Chapter of Wahunsenakah Lodge 333 recently issued two new arrowhead-shaped patches very similar to their prior A1 design. Although the design of the two new patches is virtually identical, the sizes are not.

Both differ from the A1 in that FDL's have been added on either side of the Chapter name and three W's have been added in each corner of the lower section. The face of the Chief is now red rather than brown, probably to reduce costs by lowering the number of colors used in the design.

A2 is 7" wide and 9" tall and designed as a jacket patch. A3 is 2.5" wide and 3.5" tall and classified as a pocket patch. An identical version of this patch is scheduled for release soon with a yellow border. The yellow border version will be sold to members and the red version to non-members of the chapter. Do these Kecoughtan Chapter patches really exist?

Last weekend I decided to spend time updating the long-neglected web page devoted to the Chapter Emblems of Kecoughtan Lodge. Way back in March Larry Johnson sent me pictures of several event patches for camporees sponsored by Wicomico Chapter that I needed to add.

Most of all I wanted to update the listings on the page to match those in Blue Book 6 - Standard Order of the Arrow Insignia Catalog. The Kecoughtan Chapter Emblems web page was originally created over a decade ago using Blue Book 2 (1998) which did not include any chapter emblem information. The listings were based upon the photocopied sheets of Kecoughtan Lodge patch data sent to me by the late Ron Godby in 1996.

I was surprised to discover that Blue Book 6 claims there are two versions of the first Pamunkey Chapter jacket patch, with the difference being whether the embroidered deer is brown or dark brown. It also claims that there is a second jacket patch for Piankatank Chapter with a dark blue border and multicolored background. I've never noticed any difference in the color of the deer on the Pamunkey jacket patch, and I've never seen any Piankatank Chapter jacket patch other than the pentagon-shaped J1.

How about you? If you have two Pamunkey Chapter J1 patches with obviously different deer, I'd love to see a side-by-side picture. If you have knowledge of any Piankatank jacket patch other than the J1, please let me know.

New Kiskiack Chapter pocket patch

Tim Ewing provided me with a picture of the newly issued Kiskiack Chapter pocket patch, first released in June of 2008 with 250 made. The design of the patch is virtually identical to the backpatch issued by the chapter when it belonged to Kecoughtan Lodge. Other than the lodge name change, the obvious size difference, and the loop, the only other design difference is the duck replacing the acorn at the bottom center.

New Kiskiack Chapter jacket patch issued

Tim Ewing was kind to send me a picture of the newly issued Kiskiack Chapter backpatch from Wahunsenakah Lodge 333. Six inches in diameter, the patch mirrors the design of the 3 inch diameter pocket patch with loop that was released in September of last year. You can find images of both in the Chapter section of the Lodge 333 Emblems web page.

The design of the two patches feature a theme common to the original neckerchief patches and later flap patches of Kecoughtan Lodge: silhouettes of the three ships which carried the English immigrants who in 1610 settled in the area of Virginia now served by the local council. As such, they pay tribute to the history of the local area as well as preserving the some of the emblematic heritage of their prior parent lodge.
